Cook Islands

Cook Islands

Welcome to Cook Islands

With their dazzling white-sand beaches, dreamy blue seas and swaying palms, the Cook Islands are simply paradise. And an accessible one, at that. The archipelago comprises 15 islands between French Polynesia and American Samoa and while they conjure up all the romance of the South Pacific, they’re a more affordable getaway.

Join in the hip cafe culture and artisan food scene or dance the night away in a rowdy dance club. Explore ancient coral cliffs, underground cave pools and taro fields. The vibe is distinctly Polynesia and the Cook Islanders are among some of the friendliest, welcoming people in the world.

Unique Facts

  • Though named for Captain Cook, the islands – in particular, Rarotonga – were not what the British explorer saw and landed on. He instead set foot on the Palmerston Atoll and overlooked the biggest island.
  • There are actually more Cook Islanders living in New Zealand than residing in the Cook Islands. Cook Islanders get automatic New Zealand citizenship.
  • The Cook Islands have a combined landmass that is less than one-fifth the size of Los Angeles. However, the islands are found throughout an area of the South Pacific Ocean that is 690,000 square miles.
  • The Cook Islands are one of the world’s largest exporters of black pearls.
  • No buildings are taller than a coconut tree, so as not to mar the scenic views.
