Getting Around
Traffic is thick in major cities, where multi-land highways merge to narrow two-land roads. Be aware that monsoonal rains can quickly flood roads in the lowlands.
Bus service is available, although there have been serious accidents on these long-distance buses. Choose a reputable company and avoid overnight routes.
Use caution when hailing a taxi in Kuala Lumpur. Book taxis in downtown shopping areas by phone or online instead of hailing a taxi on the street. Use a car-share service is often a better choice for fare transparency.
Driver’s License
Valid US driver’s license is required.

Safety and Security
Crime is a growing concern in Kuala Lumpur, including petty theft and violent crime. The most common crimes are purse snatching and pickpocketing.
If driving on your own, keep valuables out of sight. Some criminals target drivers stuck in traffic or at a stoplight with “smash and grab” theft.
