Don’t leave Western Africa without a one-on-one encounter with the incredible people who call this their home. The diversity of the traditional people and their cultures is astounding, from Gambia to Mali, Guinea to Togo. The people who make their home reveal their traditions through boisterous festivals, colorful masks and a rich music scene.

Listen carefully and learn the legendary stories of Africa through song and dance. The Niger River is the coursing heart of the region, surrounded by tropical rain forests, sand dunes and rocky outcrops. Consider a river cruise that takes you up close to remote villages and as far as Timbuktu and Mopti.

Of course, one mustn’t come to Africa without glimpsing the untamed wildlife, and while Western Africa doesn’t have the cachet of Eastern Africa safaris, there are plenty of elephants, big cats, pygmy hippos and birds to keep you curious.
